Open Season and Hollywood’s Perceptions of Hunters and Wildlife

The movie Open Season is not kind to hunters and hunting. In fact, it isn’t particularly accurate to it’s depiction of wildlife. Together, these two representations create a toxic view of hunters and hunting that doesn’t wholly represent the truth about hunting as management tool. Explain what fallacies and common misconceptions about hunters and hunting which are presented in the movie, giving examples from the movie and explaining how it would be done if ethical real-life hunters were in the same situation.

 

Hunting and killing are two different activities. Differentiate between the two and use examples from the movie and from actuality which demonstrate the difference.

 

Deer are often referred to as “Bambi”, primarily because they relate the movie to deer. In that movie, Bambi also has issues with hunters. Between Open Season, Bambi and any other mainstream movie, what are the generalizations they are making about hunters and hunting.

 

There is a perception of hunting and “red necks” in society today. Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Red Green and various others portray hunting as a natural activity and one not always done in full accordance with the law. What do you see as society’s impression of hunters from these presentations and how are they good or bad for hunting in general?
